Proud American

Pretty sure I am off about six months, and I should be writing about this in July, but today I find myself being a very proud American. I feel like my major is history and cultural studies this month rather than photography and dance... Somehow over the past few weeks these two subjects have been creeping up on me time and time again. Today we had Howard Dodson come to devotional today, howard has served as chief of the New York Public Library's Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture, the world's leading and most prestigious repository for materials and artifacts on black cultural life since 1984. He talked about African American culture, and our country. VERY interesting. I have been studying the mid to late 1800’s in my Photo History class. What an interesting, eventful, and important time in the church and the USA! I have been reviewing Robert Franks photography series entitled, “The Americans”. (Picture of his below) I have been reading about two articles a week about culture, what it means, and the way other cultures work for my Dance and Culture class. We talk about culture, we analyze culture, and in turn, I have not only come to love and appreciate so many other cultures but I have come to love my culture, and my country. I am so proud of where I come from. I am proud of my great(x4) grandma who left everything to come across the plains in the Willey Hand Cart Co, so I could practice my religion without any persecution. I am proud of the great men who were inspired and gave us the rights to live in freedom and joy. I am grateful every day to live in this state, in this country. I am grateful for all the people who went before us to get us where we are today. God bless America. PS- Can’t wait to go to DC!!!
